Talked wifey into letting me get a commuter car to drive to work. Even though I only drive about 18 miles round trip it was already costing me about $12 a day to drive my truck. With gas prices going up it was only going to get worse. Brought this home with me Wednesday... The guy says he used to drive it, but the starter locked up on him and he didn't have time to fix it so it's been sitting since July. Don't know how truthful it is since it smells of old gas but we'll see. Picked up a re-man starter yesterday for $54 with core, hoping to get it put in tomorrow. Hoping with the starter replaced I can get it fired up. Then to go through the brakes and clean up the interior and I should be able to drive it. The body is in decent shape, only a couple of spots of rust. Worst spot is the drivers side lower hinge A-pillar. Will need to cut it out and replace. The replacement panel is less then $20. That and the hood needs some work, but that can be done at a later time while driving. I am going to cover the red primer with some flat black so it doesn't stick out so bad.

sweet....I like the frenched antenna.... and the body kit complete with batwing ..
and the odd rust spot that strangly looks like a part of the female anatamy.....
Have you owned vw's before? There a hell of a thing. make sure the bushing that the starter nose goes into is good, it holds the armature off of the magnets. otherwise it will take out the new starter asap....

I personally haven't owned one. I helped my grandpa restore the 5 he owns back to original. He has a '65, '70, '71, and two '74's. My brother has a '71 Baja that I helped with also.
I checked the brass bushing before installing the starter and it looked new, then had to take the plugs out due to it being hydrolocked with fuel. It turns over great now, just won't fire. Also found the distributor was installed 90* off. When #1 was at TDC the rotor was pointing at #4. It's sputtered a few times just won't kick. Had to come inside and warm up a little.

That looks like a standard, not a super. Have you heard of the Samba? Everything you need or want to know for VW's. www.thesamba.com/vw/I'm UncleDirty over there. Mostly on the Offroad and Thing forums.

I've got a lot of info from The samba already. It's actually where I found this car for sale. Haven't signed up there yet, just been reading up on the stuff I've needed to fix.
I thought it was a standard to due to the flat windshield. After some research, '71 & '72 were the only 2 years for the Super Beetle to have flat windshields. It' doesn't have the twin beam front suspension it has Machperson Struts. Also found out that those 2 years of SB are more expensive for certain parts. A brand new wire harness is almost $150 more.
I did get it to fire for a couple of seconds after a new cap/rotor and a new set of points. But after it fired the crankcase filled with gas, so I have to change it, hoping I didn't do any damage to the bearings. Before it fired it was clean and at the full mark, and smelled only like oil. After it fired, it is about 1/2" above full and smells of old gas. Also need to rebuild the carb and plug the hole that fell out, which is a common thing on the Solex carbs from what I hear. Anyways, that will have to wait till after my work days.

Nothing really to add. Installed a disc brake conversion kit on the front and made it stop great. Could not get the drum brakes on the front to bleed and work correctly. I do have to smile when I pull out of the gas station, 3 weeks worth of driving and it cost just under $36 to fill. So far I've saved about $350 by driving the bug instead of the truck.

Haven't updated anything in awhile for this vehicle. Drove it most of last summer, then the rear break line that runs inside under the drivers feet rusted through. Replaced the line, but then the fitting at the rear of the car was leaking. At that point with non-stop rain in the forecast, parked the Bug till I could replace the required parts. Replaced the fitting a couple of weeks ago and then decided to update the rear drums with rear disc's. That's where it's at right now. Front disc's were put on around this time last year. Put on a new exhaust header and muffler to get rid of the typical VW exhaust sound. Currently installing the rear disc kit. Need to get longer hardlines to finish the install and then bleed and I can start driving it again...and saving some $$ on gas. Next to install are a set of dual Weber 34ict carbs I got for free. Still need to buy the complete overhaul kit and the throttle linkages and get them installed. Most likely do that within in the next month or so.
