i just bought an 87 tin top from some other poorboy, i not sure what his web name is. its smurf blue with a "smurfy" sticker on the front of the hood. dose any one know anything about this truck? the engine is knocking bad, i want to do a complete rebuild, i don't know were can i buy a good rebuild kit for a top to bottom rebuild.
i just moved to Portland, dose any one know were i can go for good advise on samurai rebuilds, or good machine shops. this will be my first engine rebuild and i would really appreciate the help. i have a very tight budget, the old owner totally ripped me off and lied about the trucks condition in many ways. he told me to call him for anything but wont pick up my calls. this is the only other place i know to go for help.
thank you

I dont know of any machine shops where I am at but I think there are a few people on here who had engine work done lately. Only a couple other people with sammys on here that you could pm and ask. chk the sammy section in members rig section.

i would love to take back what i said about mat and him riping me off. he just hasent called me. my first impression of him was that he was a great guy. he assured me that the vaules needed to be adjusted and when i took it to several mechanics they told me the engine needed to be replaced or rebuilt. i just want to make this right.

Have the valves been adjusted yet? I would try that since it only costs a valve cover gasket. If that doesnt make the tick/knock go away then look into rod bearings. Usually a knock doesnt mean the motor is bad. If it has worn cylinders or piston skirts then it may need rebuilt. A single rod bearing can cause noise and is usually replacable.
If a guy were to pull the motor to do any of this then yes I could see throwing a kit in it. Maybe he was just wishfull thinking it was only valve noise?

Matt has been out of work for the last few months that is why he had to put the smurf mobile for sale. It is an extremly capable rig as long as you keep it out of the sand it just digs with the swampers and the super low gear set. From what I remember the last time I heard it was running good. But those sammys always sound rattly to me. If you are going to rebuild or swap motors look into a vw diesel or a tracker motor Welcome to poorboy I hope it all works out for you and we see you and smurfy back on the trails. There is also a local sammy group you might find the answers your looking for there www.zukiworld.com out of eugene or corvalis I think.

Those motors are just plain noisey to me, I would really make sure it needs rebuilt before you do anything drastic, I would do like Poorboy1 said and have the valves adjusted, they are known to make all sorts of noise if they are not right. I have wheeled with that rig many times and it always works good, alot of time and $$ has been put into it and even if the engine needs rebuilt you got a hell of a deal.

Welcome to Poorboy, agreed with everyone else, I'd get the valves adjusted first. Nothing against mechanic shops, but most of them will be more then willing to sell you a new motor. Daves Automotive in the city of Cornelius is a pretty honest mechanic shop if your looking?

i apologize once again for getting off on the rong foot, thank you all for the warm welcome and good advice. i will get these valves tuned in for starters and go from there.
if any one knows a good mechanic for side jobs in the portland/west linn area please let me know. i have not done much work on engine internals but i want to learn. thanks

buying a used 4/4 is like buying a used car, you take your chances, but dont start out by badmouthing someone, check in to it first,..........welcome to poorboy, and good luck with your engine prob. ......mow it begins!!

These engines are noisy little buggers. Especialy cold. If the valve adjustment doesnt help I would run some top end engine cleaner threw it. You may just have carbon build up on the pistons.
