After talking to Russ and Dan last night at work about how trashed the Gravel pit was we decided we wanted to do something about it before ODF shuts it down for good. I went up to the Forest Grove ODF office this morning after work and talked to Stephanie Beall about what kind of help or support ODF would or could give us if some of us wanted to set up a clean up day for the pit. Here is what came out of our little 10 minute meeting.
First the pit is going to be worked on this weekend during the SOLV cleanup day this Saturday the 19th of April. Anyone who wants to help them out they will be meeting at 9:00 AM at the ODOT sand Shed as you turn into Brown's Camp. She said if there was one place you wanted to work you can request to be in that place.
The second thing is that if we want to do our own clean ups we can e-mail her and they will help us out by putting up signs saying the area is closed for shooting due to clean up efforts. They will also give us as many trash bags as they can find and allow us to dump what we pick up in the trash dumpster in the staging areas. They do ask that we NOT burn the wood or anything else since there is all kinds of S!@t people shoot at up there. Tuesdays and Thursdays work well for them due to lower numbers of people using the pit and they can have a person out there to act as buffer for us from the idiots with guns.
The third thing was that one of the other ODF guys wants to smooth the parking area out so that is will be easier to pick up brass and trash. He also said that there are going to be times this summer that the pit will be closed down so that they can make and haul gravel from the pit, but he did not have the days set up yet.
I don't know how many people use this area for shooting but it will really suck, for lack of a better phrase, if we loose this shooting location. I also know that most of us are responsible enough to take out what we take in if not taking out more than what we drug in. That being said for everyone person who does the right thing there are 5 that are total dumbs!@ts and don't. I would hate to loose one of the last free places to shoot because of them.
What we wanted to know was how many people would be interested in going up and spending some time helping out cleaning the place up. I know I can't make it this weekend but was thinking maybe give it a month or 6 weeks and then go up see what kind of shape it is in and set something up with ODF if we need to. I am more than will to be the contact person for this and work with Stephanie to get the help from ODF.
I spoke to Stephanie Beall and her e-mail addy is sbeal@odf.state.or.us if you would like to contact her.
Thank you for reading my long winded message.
