That sucks if it is bent. Just means more down time for it. On the other hand if it is....*ahem* (full widths) *ahem* Did I just say that out loud?

He wants to morph the Sub's BBC, 700R4, 205 TC and axles into the heep.. And he would like to procut the back off the jeep and extent it to 102" wheelbase. I keep telling him it might be easier just to start from stratch, or buy something like the POS Truggy that is already done.

If its bent its not a total loss, shouldnt be too hard to get back straight again.

If it is bent I can not see it by eyeballing it. I will have Friday evening off (no football) so I plan on going up and using an angle finder (3') and a long level to see if the axle housing is bent. I don't know a better way for me at home to find out if it is bent. If any one else has a better idea, please let me know. I am also having a tuff time getting the jeep high enough in the air to take the coil spring out. I am building a spring compresser (two thick plates and two long bolts). Using a 2 1/2 ton floor jack and two 6" blocks on top of the floor jack and under the axle gets the jeep up in the air, but then how to a secure it? That is alot of blocks up to the frame on either side. . Man I wish I had a car hoist. What do you guys do to block up your coil springed rigs? (leaf springs seem so much easier). Thanks.

well i cheat i use pig pin's fork lift and some really tall jack stands.
put your little tires back on support the jeep right behind the front axle then take the front tires off and lower the axle you might still have to compress the spring a little but should be close

Cheater :-)..
I know the last time I added the 2" pucks above the springs, Jeff (agentJ) and I ended up using both our 5' highman jacks on the front bumper and with the front tires off, the disks hit the ground. The springs still wouldn't come out... So we ended up putting the highmans on 6"blocks (talking about a deadly combination) to get the springs out.
I never removed the back tires, and that would have helped, and I should have strapped the coils, that would have helped, but I didn't think about that until after.
This time I plan on using the spring compresser and stuffing the other tire up on some blockes (18" or so) to get some flex and support, then removing the tire off the passanger side. Does that sound better? I would also like to block the frame up some-how so while I'm under it, cutting and welding (and cursing).... it will not fall on me. THAT WOULD HURT :-) But that would be alot of blocks stacked on top of one another to support the frame and I'm not sure that is really good either.

Do you think it would hurt the swampers to pull the valve stems out of the back tires and letting all the air out? The little tires are on my buggy.

do i hear the possibility of another full width jeep in the making? what a glorious day!!!
the only thing letting all the air out will do is probably unseat the beads.

As far as telling if your axle is bent, I use the alignment machine at work to see how much the tires are cambered in. Not easy to see that the axle is bent, but the machine tells me that the tires being tilted in is a good indication, along with the axle seals leaking. As far as pulling the springs out, sounds like you are on the right track. We just use pry bars to pop them out then back in. And ya,...kinda dangerous. The spring compressor idea would be better at getting them out and back in.

I talked with Jason tonight and might be able to bring it to his house on Sunday to work on it!!! With any luck we could have it fixed on Sunday? I will look at it more tomorrow night and see if I can get it moveable and on my dad's flat bed trailer.
