The cab is sloped back a bit. It still has the original bushings from 1972. And to make things worse the rear isn't lifted as much as the front (about 1").

That would explain it! Have you thought about an exo to tie into the bed?

I wanted to do an exo-cage before I did the flat bed, but now I'm not so sure about it.

I wanted to do an exo-cage before I did the flat bed, but now I'm not so sure about it. Search for exos on that body style first. I have seen very few exos on fullsize rigs that look good. It can be done but if you dont think it thru all the way you could end up with a hundred hours of labor, $$$$ invested and then not like it and cut it all off.

Picked this up yesterday: Block: 3999289 71-79 454 2-bolt mains Heads: 353049 73-84 oval port, open chambers, 122cc combustion chambers, 255cc/119cc intake/exhaust ports Being unfamiliar with big blocks, is this just a normal casting or something special?

I pulled a pair of 305 heads out of storage to put on the engine that's in my truck now. The heads currently on the truck have 76 cc chambers and the 305 heads have 58 cc chambers. This will give a good increase in compression. I decided it'd be a good idea to gasket match the heads, and then do the intake later when I have it all apart. Hoping it will all be done by March 29th. Before: After: Part way through, showing the amount of material to be removed: Stock on bottom, nearly finished on top:

doesnt the 305 heads have alot smaller intake and exhaust ports. I was running some "light" casting heads on my truck that were 305 I think, for the higher compression. Had good power but it just didnt feel like it was giving all it could. I also ran premium in it ALL the time.

The 305 heads do have smaller ports, and obviously smaller valves, but the heads I have are the more desireable "416" castings with larger ports and valves. They generally start to run out of steam around 5,000 rpm's. Since I'm only running a 307 the smaller ports and valves will keep the velocity up. If I was running a mild 350 or larger it would probably begin to starve for air around that 5,000 rpm point, but would still be making decent power. Most 305 heads have 1.72/1.50 valves while these have 1.84/1.50.

Taking a break from more porting. Still working on the same head, intake ports are almost done. Before: After: You can clearly see the area just under the valve has been opened up considerably. I still need to do some more so that I'm happy with how it looks and feels.
