I think everyone should post up local areas they go to wheel or trail ride, or rock crawl or whatever. give the locations, and what you can expect to find there. lately i have gone to Goat Mt. alot. it's the closest for me, and i usually break something so it's easiest to limp home from. As you pass through estacada instead of going straight when you pass through town turn right and head across the bridge. follow it until you come to hillockburn rd, turn left onto it, and follow it to the top. you really have to search trails to find some really hard to pass places, most of it you could take stock rigs through. you can expect to find mostly trails to follow, hill climbs, big logs and stumps to climb over, some mud, but mostly narrow trails. there are other places i go too. this is just the closest to me. how about you guys?

for those who live neer the estacada-mololla area. i always hit up hillockburns rd. all sorts of trails from easy to hard. in the winter, if you got some bad weather, you can expect quite a bit of snow. i went up there just a few days ago and there was a good 3 ft. a few trails have been gated due to the fact that people trash the place. but i have found a way around most of them in my ranger. past the first gate on the left there is some good mud holes and a big ol rock quary. if you go further up there are some good viewpoints and shootin spots, old loggin trails. and a lake on the other side of the mtn. just dont trash the place. were about to lose the whole mtn because of it. that would be a damn shame.

i think enough of the guys who post here live in that area and use that road. we should do a clean up of that place. some spots are so bad. you walk on nothing but bullet shells. the quary is the worst. it looks like a city dump. there is garbage everywere and a car or two that have been pushed into the quary. brings a tear to the indians eye.

yeah, people going around the gates is kinda the reason that trails such as these are being made illegal to run. thats why promotory is off limits now, and almost every other trail in that area.

I have lived on that mt for 15+ years, This is what I have learned about goat moutain. from morgan rd. to the mt Hood national forrest sign any thing that is obviously not a house belongs to Pacific Fibre, beyond the sign it gets a lil sketchy on if it's national forrest of Pacific Fibre. Either way the trails, mud holes and anything that is not a gravel road is considered destruction of property. There are no established trails in this area I have done the research. The reason the gates are up is because people have not obeyed this and that is the danger with this hobby. I used to think it was ok too! I have done it my self from time too time but, I finally went and asked the local ranger station and that is what I learned.

wow . i didn't know that. that sucks, theres alot of cool trails up there. but know one seems to be enforcing that since i see tons of people up there almost every time i go. well i better find a different spot to wheel. i don't want no trouble. i definently don't want to be charged with destruction of property! i got alot of people i gotta tell that too.

I've done some dirt biking on Goat Mountain, but never brought a 4x4 up there.
If you like high desert, China Hat got thousands of acres of trails. Most are for bikes and quads, but there's plenty for a weekend of 4x4'ing. To get there, starting in Bend, go 20miles east hwy 20, there's a sign there and usually free trail maps. The maps have the trails numbered and color coded by dificulty. We used to go in about another 20 miles, set up a camp and start playing from there. There's numerous staging areas and countless places to camp. Bring your own water (there's none in the area), don't go alone (get lost, hurt, or break down and the help might be a long time coming), and avoid July and August as camp fires will be prohibited and the slightest wind can blow up so much dust as to ruin the trip. Best time is from now to June. Fall is good, but there's a lot of hunters that don't appreciate all the noise of 4x4'ers. I got a great 4x4 mule there in '02.

goat mt. is totally legal, if you stay on the trails. it's really best in the snow. there was even an article in CRAWL mag this month on goat mt.
