Forestry Department Extends Public Comment
Period on Recreation Zone Planning Near Astoria
The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has extended the comment period until April 21 for public input on establishing motorized recreation zones in the Clatsop State Forest’s Astoria Basin, a forested area southeast of the city limits.
ODF’s Astoria District is conducting planning to determine recreation activity zones for the basin. Activity zoning – motorized and non-motorized – is a management tool used by ODF to minimize recreational impacts to the forest and reduce conflicts among recreation user groups.
Neighborhoods bordering the state forestland include John Day, Fernhill, Emerald Heights, Williamsport, Walluski and east Astoria.
The original comment period was set to expire March 31. ODF extended the time period to allow for more public input. Five initial options represent a range of possible zoning alternatives, from providing no motorized zones to a maximum of motorized zoning. Maps showing the different alternatives are available at the ODF Astoria District Office and on-line at: www.oregon.gov/ODF/FIELD/ASTORIA/State_Forest_Management/Current_Events/ast_basin/ast_basin.shtml
Comments or questions should be directed to Larry Sprouse, support unit forester, by mail at ODF Astoria District Office, 92219 Hwy 202, Astoria, OR 97103, by e-mail at lsprouse@odf.state.or.us, or by fax at (503) 325-2756. His phone is (503) 325-5451.
In coordination with the Clatsop State Forest Recreation Advisory Committee, ODF will use the comments to develop a final zoning plan for the Astoria Basin. The committee, made up of members of the public, each representing a particular form of forest recreation, has been working for the past five months on a plan for the Astoria Basin.
In motorized zones, off-highway recreational vehicles – such as motorcycles, all terrain vehicles, and 4-wheel drive trucks – may be permitted on designated trails or areas. In non-motorized zones, all motorized vehicles are restricted to surfaced roads, and trails are designated only for hiking, horseback riding, or bicycles.
