Brown's Camp OHV trails needs your help! Please spread the word….
The Oregon Department of Forestry (Forest Grove District) is submitting an ATV Grant Application to help fund a contract to complete much needed trail maintenance and upgrade work on several motorcycle/quad trails in the Browns Camp OHV area and we need letters of support to go along with the ATV Fund Grant Application. The trail maintenance and upgrade work will take place on 8 to 10 miles of motorcycle and quad trail in the Browns Camp area. The contract details (including cost) are being worked out at this time. At this point the following trails will be included in the contract package and other trails (Julies Trail #8 and Crooked Bridge #3) may still be added to the scope of work.
Sidewinder Trail #9
Clydes Trail #7
Elliot Creek Trail #25
Work will include grading the trail surface, building waterbars and rolling dips for drainage, surfacing with 4 to 6 inch minus rock, and construction of some short reroute segments. Cost details are also be worked out at this time.
As you know, many of the trails in the Browns Camp area are currently closed. Some are closed because they are in poor condition and require repair before they will be open for use. The ATV grant will be used to help fund the trail maintenance and upgrade contract so we can more quickly repair and re-open the damaged trails. Sidewinder and Clydes Trail fit into this category. The contract would be awarded late this spring and the repair work would take place between late spring and fall.
Letters of support are required as part of the application package and the ATV Account Allocation Committee, which advises the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department on projects to fund, likes to know that the motorized trail users are supportive of projects being submitted. So it is extremely meaningful and powerful to include letters of support from users that are involved and supportive of the grant applications that are submitted. Your letters of support will be submitted with the grant application to show public support for the project.
The committee will be evaluating the grant application based on a variety of criteria. Some of the criteria include:
Extent to which the project satisfies an identified need. – In this case the trails are closed and this project is needed to get them repaired and opened as soon as possible.
Degree to which the project helps protect and restore natural resources.- In this case the condition of the closed trails (closed or open)contributes to resource impacts, such as soil erosion and sediment delivery to streams.
Project urgency – In this case some trails will not open until repairs are made so it is urgent to get the repair work done as quickly as possible.
Sustainability – In this case the trails can’t accommodate existing or future increases in use and unless significantly upgraded will continue to be long term maintenance problems. They need to be upgraded so they can accommodate the use, reduce the potential for impacts to the natural resources, and minimize short and long term maintenance need.
As stated above, if we are successful the grant money will be used to help fund trail maintenance and upgrade work on about 8 to 10 miles of motorcycle/quad trail in the Browns Camp area.
Your letters should express support, in your own words, for the project and how it will benefit the OHV community and OHV trail users on the Tillamook State Forest. They can be short and to the point or detailed. You could talk about some of the reasons you support it from your perspective or the perspective of your organization. You could talk about how important it is to set the trails up so they can better accommodate the increases in use that we are experiencing or how important it is to get the trails open from a safety perspective.
Some other points to consider making are:
This grant will allow us to spread out our limited resource to address other OHV trail maintenance needs on the Tillamook State Forest, including maintenance work needed on some of the four-wheel drive trails.
As OHV trail use continues to increase the maintenance and upgrade work also increases.
Maintaining and repairing OHV trail on the Forest is consistent with direction in the Tillamook State Forest Recreation Plan.
Talk about the activities trail use activity you participate in and any forest, campground, or trail experiences you have had in the forest that would support this trailhead project.
Talk about how you use the Tillamook State Forest OHV trail system, such as family outings, club events, rides with friend, exploration, etc.
If you represent a trail organization, it would be good if you signed your letters as a representative of your organization. If you have organization letterhead paper that would be a bonus, although not necessary.
