So who has insurance on their non-street legal wheeler?
I know we had a thread on this before and I am closer to having something figured out for my rig but thought I would see how others are doing it.
I am not talking about the rigs that are driven on the street and hit the trail, I am talking trail only rigs.
Do you have insurance? Does the insurance company know exactly what you have?(I had insurance a couple years with an exact explanation of what it was, but 2 years into teh policy they got my photo and dropped me)
I have yet to find an oregon company that will insure a modified offroad rig yet that knows exactly what you have. Sure the agent may sell you coverage but if an underwriter sees a pic it gets turned down. So the question is does anyone have coverage after explaining their rig and submitting a photo?
I know it is possible to simply call up and say insure "this" rig, pay them, and say thanks. Technically you have coverage until any claims are filed. I could do that but what I am after is a substantial comprehensive package and that is where the photos come in.
According to weeks of research and talking to a few other wheelers who had similar issues I have found out that technically there is not a legal rig that could wheel the Crushers. Sure there are rigs with insurace that wheel the single and double black diamonds at Browns Camp but I would be willing to bet their agents do not have photos of their rigs on file. If they do I want the name of their insurance company because they will be my new company too, but I am not holding my breath that they would cover a modifieed rig.
Rant over.

I just wing it with mine. Gave them my bin and what not. I had the same problem. You can insure a quad but not an off road vehicle. So I just wing it and let my renters cover theft and what not.

I recently switched to farmers because progressive would no longer insure my unregistered vehicle. It is trail only and I told them it was modified but I never gave them a picture. They insured it as a buggy/recreational vehicle. I also had to insure another vehicle with them so I could use the storage feature and just call them when I take it out. If you want I can get you the agents number and you can chat with them. I called around to alot of places that said they could do it but this was the only place that understood what I needed and made it happen.

I had many agents say "no problem" but when the underwriter gets the pic they tell the agent no way. I understand I can just give with the vin, but the problem is I want comprehensive that covers the total value of the truck. If I do not declare the value that I think it is worth up front then the comprehensive will limit out at blue book. Blue book wont cover the cost of the tires.
I may have a couple places that do nothing but special purpose vehicles, I am looking into them. I am just trying to get my coverage the correct way with certantly that I am taken care of if/when I need them on my side.
I have a couple rigs insured that are lifted with oversize tires and the insurance company knows what they look like. The stupid thing is I talked to a couple underwriters and in their mind they say they usually wont cover anything over 4" lift. I laughed at him.

When I insured my motorcycle my agent said that I could get a discount if I was in a club. I wonder if the insurance companies would give more latitude if you are affiliated with a club like PNW. I pay PNW membership dues of $40 a year which covers liability for my family when we go to the PNW events. The agent should also be aware of the safety rules your rig would need to meet as well. Just a thought and I'm going to talk to my agent latter today about this.

Ug, I talked to my Allstate agent and they said that the rig would need to be mad from a kit, or sold by a reputable vendor, and worth less than 20K. Anything that was home made could not be insured. I don't see much difference in how my rig is put together than a custom hot rod except for how it is used. There going to check into this a little more and get back to me.

They told me my homeowners will not cover car parts, any claims on a vehicle part has to be done under one of the auro policies. I did find a place that said they insure rockcrawlers but upon further investigation they would not insure mine because the engine was too big. There just seams to be nobody who will cover our kind of vehicle knowingly. Still have a few avenues I haven't exhausted yet.

so i decided to call geico(my insurance) i told them what i have and that the explorer was street legal and was told no, so i asked whats the difference between this and a quad or a motorcycle he said the requirements were different (didn't go into it) so i recommended that he talk the bosses and suggest that they set something up cause there are lots of people that could use it

hey PB just wondering if you put a post up on pirate asking the same question? No I did not cause there are a few threads on there already. Just thought I would get the local feed back on here. Be careful anyone checking into their own policy because there is a chance your insurance company will drop your coverage if you ask too many questions.

That's what happened to me with geico, I called and asked about it. Then when I called to insure it, "we can't insure that rig and never will. We have a red flag up that says off road use only." So I said F U ill insure my vehicles some where else. They told me they would insure my others but I did not want 2 different policies. So like Jason said watch what u say and ask.
There was a way to do it. You have to title it as an atf then they will insure it I guess. From what I have been told. I just did not feel like hassling with it.
