I seen a guy just smooth the bottom of the axle so he would slide over stuff easier. The shave kit will give you an inch or so but thats allot of work for just that inch, you know?

It depends on what the rest of your rig is set up like. If your mostly stock then a ballistic kit is a little over kill. I simply cut and ground the bottom of the case until the casting lip was gone. I gained about an inch of clearance for free.

well my truck is not stock but its not fullblown out of control. I was just thinking about it because im moving from a dana 60 to a 14bolt, the thing that i notice the most is that casting lip where the cover bolts to, are you telling me you ground that down a inch and them just re-drilled new holes in the casting and cover?

I ground it down to about with in 1/4" of the bottom bolt. Getting rid of the lip was the biggest advantage, it use to hang on rocks.

I did a kit from vertical limit, half the price, it went in super slick and got better than 2in of clearance. It went in slick and it is worth the time imho.. we did stock, then a lip cut and then a full shave on a buddies rig and the differance was notable and worth it!
