Hey guys,
As i get close to starting my new engine ive been doing research and talking to my friends about the right way to break in an engine.
I've done enough research to know that there are plenty of opinions out there and i wanted to run my own engine break in theory (formulated from my research and friends opinions) past some ppl with more experience.
if it helps, its an auto, with 4.10s and 36's
What ive done so far:
Basically everything on this engine is new, or in great shape.
Assembled and torqued correctly (as far as i can tell)
I primed the oil pump with a drill for about 10 min about 2 weeks ago. (i work slow/as time permits)
Here is what im planning on doing:
Compression check. (looking for about 100 psi)
Squirting a little oil in all the cylinders.
Cranking the engine with coil unplugged.
Start engine, varying rpm from 1500-2500 until engine is at operating temp, making sure nothing is leaking or wrong noises, then take it for a short 10 min drive in town.
Let it cool to ambient temp, change filter.
Start engine and do the same rpm varying as before until operating temp,go out into the country, bursting(50% throttle) from 30-55 letting the engine slow me back down, doing this for 20-30 min.
Let engine cool to ambient temp.
Start and let idle to operating temp.
Third time out into country, more aggressive with throttle(75% pulls) for 20-30 min.
Let cool.
Compression check. New filter.
Start and let idle to operating temp.
From then on just varying speeds and throttle a lot, 20-70mph with 50-100% throttle, for about an hour or so, then letting it cool, and doing this last step a bunch until i get decent compression numbers.
At that point i would consider my engine broken in, change the oil, and go wheeling. But still being wary of constant highway speeds and RPMs until 1000-1500 miles. Changing my oil at 500 and 1000 miles.
any input is appreciated!!!!
Soon enough ill be back on the trail! ;D . My goal is by the end of the month.
