I've seen lots of people ask if the axle shafts can be swapped between a 10bolt and a dana 44 in the past but never seen pictures of them side by side. While I was replace the joints in Ashley's daily driver ('84 with a 10bolt) I placed them with the old shafts from her race truck ('76 with a dana 44). 10 bolt on top, dana 44 on bottom The longside shaft is shorter on the 10 bolt. The surface for the seal is also in a different location. The stub shaft looks to be close and might swap between the two, though the 10 bolt has extra groves for clips that the dana 44 shaft does not. The shortside shaft is longer on the 10 bolt. The surface for the seal is also in a different location.

You are correct, the inner shafts will NOT interchange, but the stub shafts (outers) will interchange.

ok ive gone over these pics and have some observations. please correct me if wrong. by design the shorter long shaft would be stronger than the longer one? they look the same diameter. i did notice a longer taper on the 10 bolt axle. weak point? im not real versed in the chevy front axles which is why im asking. im running a 10bolt in my blazer and im trying to decide if i should change it to a dana44 or not. i cant afford a D60. i can always upgrade to chromoly shafts and u-joints later if i need too. but since i havent wheeled this rig yet im not sure of any weak points. i would think that by design the 10bolt would be stronger because of shaft length?

imo i thing the 10 bolts stronger, carrier is a bigger ,(in stock fourm) but theres more parts avalible for the dana 44,
didnt your blazer have a 44 in when you got it, i know it was 6 lug but could have swap outers and it would be 8 lug.

didnt your blazer have a 44 in when you got it, i know it was 6 lug but could have swap outers and it would be 8 lug. it had a 10 bolt with 3.08 gears the longer shafts are stronger cause they twist more before braking, most of the time you brake stubs or the short side inner. that axle steve-o has for sale is a hell of a deal for someone that cant go 60. the cromo shafts cost 400 alone. 456 and locker
