Truck-92 F250 7.5L E4OD 4x4 Problem- Sporadic soft shifting
Symptoms- I checked the fluid today and the level is fine but it has a couple of bubbles, like two or three and is not out right frothy. It has felt a little on the soft side for a week or two now.How ever one night it felt super solid but hasn't done it since. When started after sitting over night, it feels like a trans low on fluid for a few seconds then starts to lock up better.
Question- I think I'd consider it aerated but not entirely sure and I'm wondering if it's a possible leak at the filter seal or if I got some thing worse going on like a bad seal for the TC. Any Ideas?

I'm on my third E4OD tranny. The bearing in the drum went out and everything inside went boom and the first one, but nothing led up to me thinking something was wrong. The last tranny seemed to have similar problems to what you are talking about. When this one went out my truck was like in neutral and would barely move when I gave it quite a bit of gas (would move maybe a foot or two). I was told it was the torque converter, but not positive as I had the tranny and torque converter replaced with Ford factory units. I would talk to a tranny shop.

I think it's not toast yet. I added a little more fluid since it was towards the bottom of the crosshatches and it felt a little better but had more bubbles so I know it's got a aeration problem now. I just have to find out why now. I know filter seals cause it but wondering what else and I did use a 4x4 filter.

I just need it to live long enough for me to finish my car which is being held up by my bro in law trying the garage up or until I can afford to order a rebuild kit and go thru my old trans.

I'm not to much help when it comes to this, but I have had a couple Ford trannies start to slip and give me problems. I had a friend (That use to rebuild transmissions) tell me to try "Quick shift" transmition fluid (1-2 quarts) and it did help both transmissions. They were never perfect but they never failed me and I continued driving them for years after putting in the fluids.
I also used 2 quarts in my race car when we rebuilt the transmission and it always shifted great, even after years of abuse.

Is there a brand to look for or just quick shift? I've read a lot of bad things about fluid treatments so I've always kept away from them. I'm going to just drop the pan and check to see if the filter dropped. There's companies that make special clips to hold em in on E4od's so I take that as a common issue. Off hand do you know if it's supposed to work with all fluid or certain types cause I only run dex/merc as ford directs in my trans. In my chev I run ford type F to help it lock up but I've read these things are real finicky about fluid type.

I've heard alot of bad things about fluid treatments (and flushes) as well, and as a rule I don't use them. But becasue I was having such problems with the first tranny (It would take 5 minutes before it would move when it was cold and even then shift soft the rest of the day), I thought I wouldn't be out much money to try it, as it was recommended to me. I'm glad it worked for me! I would read the details on the bottle and make sure it will not hurt your tranny. I would also drop the pan and look at those clips, then if you don't find anything, I would at least try the additive as you need to put oil back in it anyway and I think the bottles cost around $8 per bottle. I know it really makes a tranny shift harder and quicker for some reason. Also smell the fluid, if it smells like rotten eggs then the clutches are probably gone. Someone else on here had a tranny problem and I told them about this, they tried it and it worked for them as well. I don't think either of us pulled trailers and such after having issues like you are having. That may kill it the rest of the way. Best of luck to you. I know cousin mike has had to repalce his tranny 2 times and they are not cheap to get fixed....

Sorry I wasn't clear about the clips as I don't have them. It's a aftermarket deal, the filter just presses in and held in soley by the seal. Im going to check out the additive probably today when I stop to get fluid. It could probably use a fluid change any after having the truck loaded down and towing a car 1000 miles from SoCal. And yes the fluid stinks a little but not grenaded trans stink. When I blew the first trans I getto booty flushed the lines shown in my trucks thread so I think some stink is from it and some from passing people in the pass coming up. I'm going to cross my fingers when I drop the pan, if I see a lot of clutch material I may wanna cry.

Good luck, please let us know if adding the trick shift helps. Again, two cans seems to help the best, one can is not enough. static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/norm/bmm-80259_m.jpgB&M Trick Shift fluid is the easiest way to firm up your transmission's shift performance. Not an additive, this safe and effective blend of extreme pressure agents and foam inhibitors will produce a noticeable shift improvement when you completely replace your existing fluid. It meets and exceeds Type F requirements, and is available in conventional and synthetic formulas. Looks like it is cheaper now $4.25 per quart. www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80259/

I saw a couple bottles at napa but the 11$+ price made me not even want to pick the bottle up to read it. I spent a little too much on paint this last week and napa didn't even have the fluid I need so I have to wait till mid week or till the weekend. I want to put a drain plug in too so I'm hoping to track one of those down before I do this. When I get it done I'll post what I found.
