Anyone ever run rim screws instead of bead locks? I am looking at using rim screws with my paddles for SB as I spun a tire on the rim last time out and ripped up a tube. They sell grade 8 - 3/4" - #14 screws for doing this, but was wondering if I would be ok not using grade 8 as I can only find these online and there expensive. I bought a box of 100 regular #14 screws for $10. It is suggested using 12 screws per side, so I was thinking of using 16 or so. Another option would be to use bead sealer to help hold the tire in place better and bump the air pressure up, but I would get less traction on the sand.

im assuming that you want to run the srews into the bead of the tire.. Drag racers have been doing this for decades... i dont think i would have a problem trying the non grade 8 screws even if you only use the same amount per side but i might try finding stainless... here is an "offical" wright up that would be pretty much the same. www.mickeythompsontires.com/tech.php?bulletin=s4

I read that article too, good information. I'm not running near the horse power drag racers do so I was thinking it wouild be fine.
I bought coated steel screws. I'll see if I can find stainless at the hardware store.

I would run the screws and bead sealer. If it doesnt work I am sure we could come up with some sort of real beadlock for you.

Found a box of 100 stainless steel screws at Ace for $25. The Mickey Tompson and Moroso screws are about $1 each.

do you have to use the tube? why are you gonna use screws instead of weld on beadlocks? how many times are you gonna be able take the screws out (for what ever reason) before your tire is trashed? im just thinking so dont mind me

That's a good point Popeye. I took the tires in and has the bad tube replaced and had them push the beads off the rim so I can drill the rims. The rim screws are 3/4" long and feeling the thickness of the beads I'm a little concerned now that the screws might be too long and damage the tube as well. The tires leak through the sidewalls due to changing rim widths and age so I can not go tubeless. So I'm thinking now that I will just use bead sealer and a little more air pressure for now until I can come up with some weld-ons. Must be a reason why you don't see much of these anymore, or at least I don't see them.

I had troble with spinning the tire on the rim and would pull the stem right out of the tube. My tires were so old when you ran them without tubes in the rain you could see the sidewalls bubble. I ended putting a whole bottle of the green tire snot in each one. Seamed to seal up pretty good.
