everywhere I looked called for between .003 and .007 backlash. I think I ended up about .006 Wish I knew you were doing it, I made a set of set-up bearings that slip on and off easy.

this is off Pirate.
Quick Ref Specs – Dana 60:
Backlash Set To: .004” - .009” To decrease backlash – add shims to RGS To increase backlash - add shims to non-RGS Approx 0.007” change in backlash for every 0.010” carrier movement
Pinion Depth Set to: Contact pattern cantered between top and root. Top contact – add shims Root contact – remove shims
Pinion-bearing Preload Set to: 10-20 in-lbs used bearings / 20-40 in-lbs new bearings To decrease preload – add shims To increase preload – remove shims
Torque Specs Pinion Nut: 220-280 ft-lbs Ring-gear Bolts: 120-140 ft-lbs Bearing Cap Bolts: 70-90 ft-lbs Diff Cover Bolts: 40-50 ft-lbs

everywhere I looked called for between .003 and .007 backlash. I think I ended up about .006 Wish I knew you were doing it, I made a set of set-up bearings that slip on and off easy. HE'S USING HIS OLD GEARS SO HE NEEDS TO OPEN UP THE BACKLASH TO .010 TO.015 OR TO THE BEST PATTERN ON THE GEAR.

Checked my pattern and it appears that I have too much backlash. Hmm. Imagine that. Looks like I will need to look someone up that has a bearing puller...
