Alritht this may sound stupid, but im a farm boy and can help but think. Would it be possible to us drive line from a pto from a tractor,? They seem to be unbreakable, run at odd angles, and reasonably cheap. They can lengthen and shorten to a wide variety of lengths. And arnt near as expensive as the "good" driveshafts available. I dont know, just another idea. If you have any thoughts or ideas let me know. Thanks SPencer

I'll tell ya what, you can use anything ya want. My drivelines are made of schedule 40 pipe and has held up just fine. usually the yolks are the weak link.

Thats cool, I once saw this offroad show and this guy had ;a custom 4 link suspension using the 3pt hitch attachments from a tractor. That how I got the idea to go with the pto. I think i will try and find out if the u joints will work with my 14 bolt and atlas.

only problem with tractor 3point parts is they will wear quicker than a "top" dollar joint. But there is people on here that built their 4link out of em and their rig is still going.

You said it will wear quicker, are you talking about the u joints?? What if I buy the shaft then get some highgrade u joints.. Also I was curous is if I should replace my factory locking hubs or are they sufficient, they are from a 10bolt fron t ent

I was talking about the joints from a 3 point set up wearing quicker. Hubs arent a bad upgrade. The only trouble I had when i was running stock hubs were they didnt always lock in for me but that was on a dana 60. I never broke a hub but plenty of axles with the half ton. Of course all my half ton stuff always had warn hubs.

Are hubs hard to swap out , looks like the warns are about 130 a set. Im not sure i want to dump alot of money into a ten bolt. its about like a d44 i think. I have a detroit for it, but I am not sure how well it will hold up under heavy use, I am only running 36s right now, but i would like to drop some unimogs under it someday, or at least some rockwells. After all i already have a pretty good hydraulic steering set up, just as well plan to have 4 wheel turning someday.

it has about the same strength as a d44. A detroit and 36's is pushing it. You wont have trouble in mud or sand but as soon as you get in some hard turns and put any power to it you will take the chance of snapping axles. You might be ok but thats about as far as I would trust a 1/2 ton front end. I ran 38's with mine and did ok with a limited slip. As soon as I locked it up I broke every time out.

well that sucks, I will have to be carefull. Maybe after i finally graduate I will be able to get myself a 60 front end. I wonder if there are sufficient upgrades to combat this problem? I dont think the ten bolt front end is terrably common..

What were you breaking, Axle shafts?? I hope i dont have that problem, I cant afford new axles right now, I still need to pay for the new atlas and body tub

I snapped the ujoints at the axle ends wich in turn ruined the inner and outer axles. 10 bolts are pretty common. If you stick with the 36's and think twice about the detroit or at least be careful when using with the detroit you may get away with minimal damage.

Would it be better to just upgrade the ujoint ends. Do they have a heavy duty upgrade, alloy or something. I already have the detroit. I would love to sell the axle and get a sixty with a detroit, just have to find someone who would buy one. It hardly has any miles on it. Is the 10 bolt equilivelant to d44 or bigger/smaller. It came out of a 3/4 ton truck. If I could make it last till i get done with school i could get some real axles. I would like to run 38.5 or 40's some time in the next few years, after I wear out my 36's.

the dana 44 and 10 bolt are the same strength even though the 44 has more splines because the 44 axles are necked down the same as the 10 bolt. Yes you can upgrade the 10 bolt but by the time you put chromoly axles and good u-joints you are into it as much as a used dana 60. U will break the ujoints and if they dont break the ears around the joints will break. I wouldnt dump alot of money into them save it for the dana 60. A cheap upgrade is brute force u joints. They are usualy stronger than the axles and are only $20 each. No point in going with ox or ctm joints with stock axles.
