Alright so I've been told my th400 is pretty indestructible for the setup I have in my yota but I'm runnin into the problem of only running 3 gears
My buddy says the 700r4 is a good tranny but wouldn't recommend them for wheelin he hauls concrete an such an he's gone through 3 in 2 years
I'm re gearing to 3.73's to kinda help with mileage since it's in my DD An throwin a quadrapuke back on.
Youthink I should stay with my TH400?

personally i like my 350 even though it has a leak and first is set high but once again its a 3 speed. ive been thinkin bout a 4 speed manual swap. saw one on clist with a 205 for 200. and it was a muncie so its pretty good

I like the gearing and 4 speed of the 700R4's. The first gear is lower and makes it really nice for trails, but as you have said they are not as strong as a TH400. They are suppose to be as strong as a TH350, but you can build them up to be much stronger. They are not weak, but depending your HP, tire size and gear ratio's (Tcases and axle) you might want something different. If you are putting in a stock 350 with under 37" tires you should be fine with a 700R4.

The 700R4 is about the same length as the Th400 if that maters. The TH350 should be as strong as the TH350, but like others said you get a lower 1st gear and over drive if you are concered about milage. I've been running the TH350 I built last winter really hard and it's doing great, so the 700R4 should do the same.

I'M CURRENTLY RUNNING ABOUT 350HP THROUGH A TH350, BUT RUN OUT OF GEARS ON THE TOP END SO I HAVE ROUNDED UP A 700R4 TO REPLACE IT-JUST WAITING FOR THE TH350 TO FAIL FIRST.

The redneck inbred that built my Burb, took a factory 3.73 geared half ton with a 700r4, and then rocked his happy azz on up to a 35 inch tire.
I get better mpg on the freeway in drive (shifting to OD actually forces me to drop my accelrator further to the floor to hold my speed) than I do in OD.. I either need 4.56's to reap the benefits of the 700r, or go back to a direct drive.
Sadly, ithas a shift kit and runs great, but I hate it.
Oh yeah, then I am 4.56's on 35's and stock half ton axles.. that seems to be a recipe for disaster.
Coem to Kellogg, we'll swap each other trannys.. 24'x30' garage......

I'M RUNNING 39.5's WITH 5:29'S SO GEARED VERY LOW. OUT IN THE SAND IN LOW RANGE IS WEAR I COULD USE THE 4TH GEAR. I KNOW JUST PUT IT IN HIGH RANGE RIGHT-TOO LAZY.

have you considered 4l80e? Its heavier duty than the th400 and has overdrive.
