you can try a cam they help a little bit, weber, header? port out your head and intake. you can put an electric fan on and pull your clutch fan off.
Mine ran 141hp but i have a 22r Heres some ideas with what we did.: Dual spring valves LCE cam port & polished head and intake weber 38 bored over .4 with some top knotch pistons headers. Electric fan.
We pretty much gutted the motor to only run the alternator and crank pulley

supposably when you pull the fan off you gain 5-7 hp but i could be wrong but an E fan draws alot of amps.

Yes putting a Ford Tours (SP) e fan on it will give you better HP and gas milage. It is cheap and easy as well :-)..
Weber and K@N air filter would be also a good step.

i always laugh when i see someone with a toyota thats looking for power.... I gave up on making power and just put money into gears lol....
If your looking to get the most power and keep carberators on it, get a 22r block and use your head.. a 20/22r hybrid is pretty cheap and there is lots of info on the net.....
if i were to swap in a better motor i would take the time and effort to throw a 3rz or even a 5rz in and call it good...

you may also want to do a compression check on it,if the power seems to be really low!

If you go to the Taurus fan, get one out of a 3.8L taurus. Also, the Lincoln/Merc/Ford full size cars with 3.8's have a good fan in them as well.
