I just picked this up so I can tow my stang home when I do finally get out. It's a 460 with auto, with the Dana 50 and sterling 10.25

I looked found the tag and it unfortunately has 3.55's but on a positive not it did come with a pretty firm feeling 'traction loc' out back. I've been doing some looking on how to free up a little power from the fi 460 and I'm really having a hard time keeping myself from doing some mods and just driving the thing.

First mods on the truck. Booty fab'd a simple mount from scrap I had laying around for the trans cooler. I ran out of square tubing or I'd have squared it completely. It is solid though, gave it a good tug and it doesn't flex so what ever. Found the silencers or air horns in the intake tube and cut them off and smoothed the peice with a dremil. Tomorrow I might get rid of the cat and put a 3" pipe and flowie in.

leave the cat if it's working... they don't rob power like they did in the 70's...

I disagree with that statement. Ford had a problem with these cats to the point they stopped using them on rv's. Now, the fallowing is advertised claims but Banks is claiming a 10% mpg increase 40hp and 50ft lbs at the tire increase just by removing the cat and running 3" tube out the back with his muffler. Add his y pipe and headers and he claims around 60 hp and 94 ft lbs of torque at the tire increase and a 15% increase in mpg. I have probable cause to rip it out aside from banks' claim, the extra 1 mpg is just a bonus.

damn... I guess a 460 has a bit more flow than I'm used to... I'm used to Ranger guys pulling them on their 4 cylinder trucks trying for the same thing when I was running twice the output through my stock cat without a reduction in power...

Same thing with the 351's and 302's. Replace that restrictive y-pipe and cat setup with a single three way high flow cat and mandrel bent y-pipe and you can gain 3-4 mpg and lower emissions, not to mention pick up about 20 hp.

Well the 460 is literally triple the engine of one if those little 2.3 four cylinders and it's breathing out through twin 2" pipes and that stupid air horn or what ever the crap it is at a glance looks like it's about 1.5 or so in diameter. It's no wonder they were only rated to 230 horse and a little higher with the fast burn heads on it. I suspect my cat might have a issue and I wouldn't mind a little more performance so it's gonna go. I'm only pulling a hair over 9mpg unloaded at almost 3000ft elevation. Any Increase in mpg is also welcome.

Failed to get the exhaust done. The exhaust I have to put on it has some weird bends in it so when I order the bank trans commander I'm going to order a section of 3" and a y peice to run that stupid twin 2" into a single to make things easier.

Do yourself a favor and get the flowmaster y-pipe (2.5 - 3" I think) and put that in place of your factory 2-1 cat. It'll be great in place of buying the $350-400 y-pipe

Wasn't ordering the Y-pipe your thinking of, I was ordering a little Y-pipe to run the two pipes into a single 3" cutting out the cat and then I was going to hang the flowie I have and over the axle piping. You got a part number for the flow master Y-pipe? Using summits part bs I only came up with one and it only fit 85 and down carb'd supposedly. Not sure if the angle of the manifolds are diff or if it just lacks o2 bungs.

Guess first things first, trans is coming out since it has just left me stranded on the side of the road. I knew I should have driven some thing else today. I just pray the trans I picked up is ok.

Ah ok, we are on the same page, some times I really need to slow down when reading. I ordered a magnaflow one for little over 10$ cheaper. There's a full on y pipe from hedman for a just over a buck and a half but it says 85 and down. Duno what diff. The exhaust pieces should be here Tuesday along with the transcommand. Just hoping that I get the trans back in it by Monday.
