Setback on the Tracker today, got a tranny but it was the wrong one! I'll probably start back up on the Ranger on Tuesday

That's pretty lame. Just checked a u-joint, complete garbage, I don't think there's any needle bearings left in them.

Made a significant step yesterday, removed the transfer case, transmission and engine, tonight I wasn't feeling that hot but still managed to scrape the goo (about a pound) off of the transmission, tomorrow I'll either pull the intake and exhaust manifolds then hose off the engine or roll the transmission out to the driveway and give it a purple power treatment...

I'll be fallowing suit hopefully soon. You going to go thru the eng while you got it out?

Yep, full rebuild minus machining (other than maybe facing a head, and of course valve grind since it's apart), so rings, bearings, valve springs and ALL SEALS, that's the important one If I have time I want to port the head, but I'm trying to get this done by October which is coming fast...

Spent an hour or so scrubbing on the engine tonight, will do more tomorrow, but I pulled the intake manifold and found out where the water got in, intake gasket was cracked in 2 places on #4 and missing a chunk on #2... that explains a few things...

No pressure washer? Weren't you saying you kept running lean and getting hot? Sealing up that intake will probably help with the issues you were having.

Stopped by my moms tonight and picked up her pressure washer, will get busy tomorrow night on that...
Funny thing about how bad my engine seemed to run, I pulled the head off yesterday and the thing looked perfect in the combustion chambers, all were chocolate milk colored, just a little buildup. I was going to bring the straight edge home from work tonight along with a valve spring compressor and forgot both... need to check if this head is warped, I don't think it is which would be nice, I'm thinking this engine has the 100k on it that the guy I got it from said... hopefully everything is stock size and I can just order off the shelf parts

no pressure washing tonight, but pulled the valves and found at least half the compression leak... the exhaust valves are all leaking a bit... intakes look good though.
Also took the straight edge to the head and the .0015" feeler gauge petal caught in the middle so I just saved myself $50...

They lap-able or are you going to have to have them cut?

Forgot to ask while posting, you got a eng hoist? If so what's it rated to? I think I might finally get to tear into the truck this week, have two more storage runs then I'm going to start my swap.

We have a valve grinder and seat stones at work, or if we can't grind the seats at work I have a connection that'll do it for me for free... Yep, have a hoist, it's one of the HF 1.5 ton ones, might work on that heavy ass piece of iron

well, not at home as you now know, but the head that was on the truck had two exhaust valves recessed about 1/32" so I have to get the warped head surfaced, and have yet to order any parts other than the tranny rebuild, will look at Rock Auto for some things but need to get with Napa as I think they can get me better rings, but I need to look over my parts better first, as my pistons have a lot of skirt wear, I need to look into a few things...
