Have you removed a ignition cable from one cyclinder at a time to see if the noise goes away? If the noise goes away on the cylinder that you removed the cable from you will know which one it is. Almost sounds like a wrist pin.

The engine shop said that the Thrust bearing was wiped out, most likely due to a ballooning torque converter. He is replacing the main bearings, giving the cylinders a touch up hone, and re ringing the pistons... Good news is, he said the motor was tuned very well. Savas auto tuning did a hell of job with that. I cant tune worth a shit, so all my engine tuning work will be taken to savas.
What do i need to do about this transmission problem? Could it be a problem with the pump?

ballooning torque converter?? I here about that with nitrous or really high HP motors, I run a 3000 stall with a anti ballooning plate in my nova on nitrous. I guess you could run one of thoughts but they seam to only have them in a vary high stall. Id say look into finding a heavy duty 1 ton truck converter.

Talked with a guy on CK5, he said a restricted cooler line could also cause a T/c to balloon. And an improper ground cable can also wipe out a Thrust bearing quickly.
Can a tranny shop check a torque converter? I got a couple t/cs that came out of th400's. that have just been sliding the garage floor.
The shop is charging me 400 bucks to replace all the main bearings, throw a touch hone on the cylinders, and re-ring the pistons. I thought that was fair, since apparently the problem with the motor was on my end. Its hard for me to trust anyone though, unless i actually see the problem. But I dont really have a choice in the matter.

well i suppose if 400 fixes it then good, otherwise if it happens again after you fix the other supposed issues i think i would be asking for my money back. and how would a bad ground cause a thrust bearing to go out?

When I replaced it with my stroked out 454, I never had a problem again. For me, it was not a transmition issue.... Cylinder head specialties motors are junk. In my 383 motor, the berrings all look like new. It appears they didn't bore the cylinders correctly on my motor. I hope yours turn out better then mine did.

So its always going to be in the back of my head, that something isnt right. Or that they are not telling me the truth.

Got the motor yesterday. Come to find out, I knew the guy that did the work this time around, he grew up just down the street from me, He is my brothers age, about 2 years younger than me. He seems like a good guy, and i will be able to contact him directly. That might be a good thing if stuff doesnt go right. Basically i picked up a long block, from crank to heads. A box of parts, and a box of gaskets. Bolts in a plastic bag, and a new oil pump. Ill start putting everything back together tomorrow. Oh yea, i have to drive back down there tomorrow to get my oil pan that they forgot to give me. I looked through the parts while i was there, and it didnt strike me until i got home

started working on it today, and i have to say, The plastic bag filled with all the bolts is irritating the shit out of me. I gave up for tonight, need to drink a beer to cure my frustration.
They also forgot to put a plug in it, right side, bottom middle... I believe its a plug to drain the coolant, I have one i can rob off my big block, but its the fact of the matter....
Also , and no oil filter adapter gasket...little things, but still nickle and dime, and another trip to the store...
