Did you build a solid axel out of IFS parts??? I've never seen that before... Hi five on the ingenuity.. What was the advantages of doing it that way???

that reminds me, I think they did say something about building it out of an ifs now that you said that. I think they did it just because they had the parts.

It is kind of a neat idea. yunning the cv joints in the tubes.

We are "yunning" the cv shafts in the axel tubes... lol We did build it because we had the parts and the dakotas lug pattern is only available for two vehicles, the dakota and the durango. Who can argue with four wheel disk brakes stock. lol A few specs on the axel housing: *Differential made of 32 puzzle pieces of 1/4 inch steel *Axel tubes are 4 inch 1/4 inch wall tube *Inner C's are 1/2 inch plate steel *All steel is fully welded inside and out *Upper and lower ball joints are from stock 2004 dakota Uppers are from 4 wheel drive and lowers from 2 wheel drive *CV shafts will only be utilizing outer joints for turning *Differential housing was not intentionally made to look like a retarded bear, but once we looked at it, we had to name it *Wilbur*(Will Bear) lol We know that it looks "slow" so we had to name it after our friend, Will, just because we always mess with each other. Anyway, here's some more close up pictures for ya. The axel went through its first test yesterday. While preparing to move the Dazer to a better working arear (aka flat ground), we temperarily instaleed a front reciever hitch. We were testing the hitch by lifting the front of the Dazer with it via a bottle jack. The bottle jack shifted, pushing the dazer over just missing the jack stands, dropping the whole front end onto the axel. Thus the scraped paint on the axel. ~Crazy

wow, I hope it works. Maybe your onto something. Have you ever seen anything like it? Or is this an original idea?

Its an original idea. There is no doubt that the axel work will... the question truely is "how strong are the parts used." We know the housing will take anything we can throw at it... its just the stock parts that might be the issue, mainly the ball joints and the cv shafts..... But only time and tests can show if those will work out or not.
We will deffinately let ya all know when the shake down run is.. and maybe we could make a trail run of it, as long as someone brings a trailer just in case lol

Are you still going to be able to replace parts if need be? Like the axle shafts and cv's.

Yeah... deffinately. It very easily but *shh* there's no axel shafts... lol its simple cv shafts and thats it. It'll take and 45 minutes to an hour to change out a cv shaft.. and the ball joints are replaceable as well. Its not different than replacing prats on a standard solid axel as far as capabilities go. It may be a little more work to replace a cv shaft, but in the end, it would about equal out to front u joint replacement in the time factor... but replacing the cv shaft is easier but more costly.
