Haven't seen this on here yet. This is an email I got from "Those Guys Off Road" about a new trail they are opening in the Mt. Hood area....
***************************************************
Hello Folks,
Let me first start by saying thank you for your interest and support in helping us create new, legal, class II trails in the La Dee Flats section of MT Hood. As a club, Those Guys Off Road has invested countless hours working with the USFS to help open the first legal class II trails in the MT Hood National Forest. That being said, we could not do what we are about to do without your support and the support of the 4x4 community, so again thank you! What we are about to create is something that our future generations will be able to enjoy for many years to come. Thanks to your assistance and the hard work of many we will be creating a responsible, sustainable, and enjoyable trail system that will truly define what happens when a group of dedicated off road enthusiasts come together in a united cause.
I am proud to be announcing the first of many work parties that we will be holding in support of trail construction on the 800 trail. The 800 trail involves turning approximately a mile and a half of 2 roads into a true class II trail, and also involves the construction of a connector trail approximately 1/2 a mile in length that will connect the two sections of trail. For those of you who have enjoyed "Stick in the Nose" in the Tillamook State Forest, this trail will use many of the same techniques seen on that trail. This trail is being designed with a Trail Management Objective (TMO) of being a medium difficulty trail for class II users and once completed will be the first 2 miles of what will become an approximate 15 miles of Class II trails in La Dee.
Our first work party will be held on Saturday August 25th 2012 beginning at 9AM. We will meet in La Dee Flats at the corner of the 4610 Road and 800 trail. For those of you whop are not familiar with the area, the following link will provide a Google Map of how to get to the location from the Estacada Ranger Station
goo.gl/maps/WYn9x
For this project we will need the following;
- Lopers
- Shovel
- Pulaskis
- Wheel Barrow
- Dump Trailer
- Skilled Equipment Operators
- Dump Truck
- Excavator
- Bulldozer
- Manual Labor
- Patience
- Good attitude
- A strong work ethic
Our biggest need will be for a bulldozer with a ripper which will be used for ripping the road and harvesting the rock out of the existing road bed. Having a D4 size dozer will make this work go much quicker than attempting to do it with an excavator. Our next need would be an excavator (preferably with a 6 way blade and thumb attachment), which would be used for creating the trail tread and creating sediment traps. Dump trucks and trailers would be used to move rock which would be used for both trail tread and to create obstacles. We have been able to round up some equipment, but we could always use more, and having more will enable us to get this trail open that much quicker.
As a reminder, all volunteers working on this trail will need to have attended an OHV volunteer training which is held in TSF. If you have not attended one and would like to, please let me know and I can work on having another one scheduled. This requirement is not done to exclude anyone, but rather to ensure that everyone who works on this trail can quickly visualize the concepts being used. We truly want everyone who wishes to participate be able to do so, so if you have not had your required training let me know and we can make that happen.
Along with the equipment we will be using to build these trails will be a need for fuel. We have currently established a wepay account through which we are accepting donations for fuel and maintenance of the equipment used to construct these trails. If you would like to help but can't attend, a small donation will go a long way in helping us create these trails. Donations can be made with a few quick and simple clicks of the mouse at the following web site.
www.wepay.com/donations/la-dee-flats-trail-fund
In addition to our wepay site we have also had several generous members of the off road community post up on our forum donations of both money and equipment. I will be reaching out to each of you who have donated over the next few days to thank you and secure your donations. We also applied for and have been awarded a $500 grant from Tread Lightly! to be used in support of trail building in La Dee. This is truly a community effort, and one that makes me very proud of the community and the sport I love.
It's been a long road, and we still have miles to go, but through your support we are making this happen. I could not have done this, and can not do this without the support of each of you, so again I thank you. Please consider this your call to action, rally the troops, tell your friends, tell your family, tell your families friends, and tell your friends families! Now is the time, now is the time to put your mark on a new trail. To often we see areas closed, now we have a chance to open one. Lets do this! Let's make the epic!
Thanks,
Jon - Aka That Guy
